
With Repentance now marking the finale for The Binding of Isaac, it's a great time to hop into the release for the first time, to experience the entire adventure from start to finish. What started out as a simple game exploded into popularity and saw many DLC releases from the developer as a result. That's not even mentioning the tainted versions of each character, which must be unlocked separately. Several are quite easy to unlock, and a novice player will do it with some effort, while others are only for those who have truly mastered what the game has no offer. Secret levels & hidden challenges are as numerous as they are impossible to find without the aid of a guide. What's more, is with a handful of acclaimed DLCs over the years, the game continues to get deeper. I was more curious about the story and abusive themes, so I was left a tad disappointed.To say The Binding Of Isaac is a deep game would be an understatement. Essentially, just know what you're in for gameplay wise and you won't be disappointed. For others this means a huge amount of replayability.

Many of the enemies seemed cheap and having to restart from the basement after every death grew very tiring for me. Even on the lowest difficulty I found it quite a slog. Thematically it's a great game and has some very dark tones, however these aren't really explored properly unless you are successful at proceeding through the levels, which I was not. I get the impression from playing that BOI is an indie darling, which encourages more positive review scores, however I found it a difficult game to like.
